Understanding hardiness zones
What is a hardiness zone?
The USDA divides the country into 13 zones (2 through 13) based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. Each zone is about 10°F colder or warmer than the next, and knowing yours tells you which plants can survive your winters.
Frost dates matter
Your last spring frost and first autumn frost frame the growing season. Tender crops like tomatoes go out after the last frost, while cold-hardy greens can be sown weeks before it.
Microclimates
Your yard may be warmer or colder than the zone on the map. South-facing walls, urban heat, and low frost pockets all shift your effective zone. Observe your own garden over a season.
